Context

Music Lesson H1

Music Lesson H1 is one of three Musical Essays, each an album, a film and a book made to be played, screened and taught. It sets words from the Qur’an to gospel spirituals, carrying the tradition born in the songs of the enslaved into a new conversation of faith and praise.

The record draws on the oldest roots of gospel—the spirituals born out of the transatlantic slave trade—and sets the language of the Bible beside the language of its reading partner, the Qur’an, as one testimony of faith and praise.

“Music Lesson H:1 is a profoundly significant cultural sign of spiritual unity in faith and praise of the God of revealed scripture.”

Sultan Rahman Muhammad, Student National Imam, Nation of Islam
